Q1. Which shaves better—Fusion ™ blades by Gillette ®, Gillette MACH3®, straight razor or safety razor? How do they differ?
A1.

Fusion™ and MACH3 blades by Gillette® are the most modern blades to date and are made to offer the closest shave in the most efficient manner.

Straight razors should be perceived as a hobby more than a necessity. With much practice, one can achieve a great shave with a straight razor, but it does require an investment in time to learn to master this art. Before safety razors, men used only straight razors.

The safety razor was invented in 1903 by King Gillette (yes, Mr. Gillette himself). It was a revolutionary invention that forever changed the way people shave. Safety razors were based on the idea that the razor would have a guide and that the blade was disposable.

Q2. What is the difference between our Shaving Soap and Shaving Cream?
A2. The difference is that the Shaving Soap requires the use of a shaving brush, whereas the Shaving Cream can be used with or without a brush. Both offer a good lather and a great shave. Both are rich in moisture, so that they will not dry the skin. Also, the Soap takes a bit more time than the Cream to lather up to a rich consistency. We find that Shaving Soaps appeal to a more traditional clientele who appreciate old-world charms.
Q3. What is the difference between our After-Shave Balm and our After-Shave Gel?
A3.

The Art of Shaving After-Shave Balm is formulated with Algae, Shea butter and vitamins to give moisture to the skin. It is recommended for normal to dry skin types. The Balm is recommended for the winter months.

The Art of Shaving After-Shave Gel is formulated with Algae and herbal extracts to hydrate the skin. It is recommended for normal to oily skin types. The Gel is recommended for use in the summer months.

Both of our After-Shaves are made to soothe and protect, and act as a mild antiseptic.

Q4. What are the benefits of using our After-Shave Mask®?
A4. The Art of Shaving After-Shave Mask with Royal Essential Oil is the first of its kind—formulated to remove any shaving irritations, rejuvenate the skin, deep cleanse the pores, and give a healthy glow to the skin.
Q5. Can any of our products, i.e. Shampoo or Conditioner, be used by women?
A5. The Art of Shaving products are formulated with only healthy skin and hair in mind, not gender. All of our products are safe for women to use.
Q6. What are the differences between our Moisturizer and our After-Shave Balm or Gel?
A6.

The After-Shave Balm was formulated to use after shaving. It has anti-bacterial, antiseptic, and anti-inflammatory properties. It helps regenerate the skin after shaving.

The Moisturizer is a skin treatment with anti-aging properties, formulated to dry with a matte finish. It should be used after the After-Shave Balm after shaving, or at night after cleansing the skin.

Q7. What is the difference between The Art of Shaving Hair Gel and other gels?
A7. The Art of Shaving Hair Gel is formulated with Bergamot essential oil which strengthens and fortifies the hair shaft. It protects the scalp from dandruff or itchiness. The Art of Shaving Hair Gel contains no alcohol or synthetic fragrances which can dry out the hair. We do not use any polymers—gelling agents derived from plastics, which don’t let the hair breathe properly. This could lead to dandruff, itchy scalp and dry hair, even hair loss.
Q8. When should I use the Hydrosol-Rose Water?
A8.

Use it after every shave before applying The Art of Shaving After-Shave Balm or Gel. With each shave, a thin layer of skin is removed, depleting the skin of necessary moisture and causing minor irritation. Hydrosol-Rose Water replenishes lost moisture, hydrates, soothes and refreshes the skin, while working as a natural astringent.

Use it throughout the day as a calming, soothing, alcohol-free toner and mild astringent to prevent dryness and irritation. Apply after cleansing and exfoliating the skin, before applying moisturizer. Reapply whenever you wish to refresh and hydrate the skin, while stirring the senses. A great selection for travelers.

Q9. What makes The Art of Shaving Lip Balm better than drugstore-bought?
A9. Our Lip Balm does not contain petrolatum or mineral oil, ingredients commonly found in most lip balms. These synthetic ingredients temporarily moisturize the lips when applied, but within minutes will leave your lips even drier than before, forcing you to use the lip balm over and over again—the lips never heal. Our natural ingredients quickly moisturize and repair the lips, and protect even without sunscreen. Unlike the synthetic fragrances in most other lip balms, the essence of Balsam Peru in our Lip Balm can be ingested safely, making it healthier to apply on the lips. Actually, Balsam Peru is used in many cough drops and syrups.
Q10. Why is it that The Art of Shaving Facial Wash does not foam like soap?
A10 The Art of Shaving Facial Wash foams only lightly, because it is not soap. It is formulated with the mildest foaming ingredients from coconut oil, corn sugar, and apple cider vinegar to retain the skin’s pH level. After cleansing, your skin will be well moisturized. The Art of Shaving recommends staying away from any soap or products containing "Sodium Lauryl sulfate” which is very harsh and strips natural oil and moisture from the skin. Sodium Lauryl sulfate is the main foaming ingredient found in home detergents such as dishwashing liquid, laundry detergent, carpet cleaner, etc. It is also the most common ingredient found in most shampoos and facial wash.
Q11. Do you get a closer shave by using a straight razor rather than a modern multi-blade?
A11. In order to achieve a closer shave you need the right products and proper shaving techniques. You will achieve the same shave with a modern swivel-head razor or a straight razor as long as you know how to use one properly. If you decide to use a straight razor, we recommend that you invest some time and effort in learning how to use it from a professional barber.
Q12. What are the skin properties of Lavender, Sandalwood and Lemon essential oils?
A12.

Lavender is distilled from the French flowering plant and has a sweet, fresh aroma. Its soothing, calming, healing, gently antiseptic qualities are recommended for sensitive skin.

Sandalwood comes from a tree found in India with a woodsy, very masculine aroma, reputedly aphrodisiacal. Its moisturizing, regenerating, antiseptic properties are recommended for dry skin.

Lemon, extracted from lemon peel, has a fresh citrus aroma. Its refreshing, antiseptic, astringent and toning qualities are recommended for normal to oily skin.

All three essential oils are recommended for normal skin types.

Q13. Why don’t we put any synthetic perfumes in The Art of Shaving products?
A13.

Synthetic perfumes are made of chemicals that replicate the scent of natural essential oils. These chemicals are the leading cause of skin allergies and irritation in the cosmetic industry. The risk is even greater when used in shaving products, because while shaving a small layer of skin is removed, leaving the skin of the face and neck more vulnerable.

Natural essential oils are in keeping with The Art of Shaving philosophy of using only natural ingredients which can have beneficial properties as well as natural aroma. Synthetic fragrances, on the other hand, add no benefits and can irritate the skin.

Q14. What is the difference between foams, gels and The Art of Shaving Shaving Cream or Soap?
A14.

Think of it as the difference between wet and dry, between heat and cold. First, most foams and gels bought in drugstores are 100% synthetic and are not good for the skin. Second, foams are packaged in aerosol cans. Cold air makes the product come out of the can in a fluffy cream consistency. This foam is cold and does not require water (but water is the most important ingredient in shaving!). Cold shaving cream makes the hair follicle stiffen and the pores close. Further, many foams are mentholated, which creates a cold reaction on the skin and can be irritating.

Gels are not as bad as foams but are still not very effective. Gels generate a lightly lubricating lather which offers very little protection to the skin. Therefore it is hard to get a close and comfortable shave. If you go against the grain when using a gel, you will most likely irritate the skin. Gel is also used cold.

The Art of Shaving Shaving Cream and Soap are made to soften the beard and open the pores using hot water. Water is the most important ingredient in shaving—that’s why it’s called wet shaving—and heat is nearly as important. Shaving Cream and Soap contain Glycerin and coconut oils to offer great lubrication and protection. When lathered up with a shaving brush and hot water, they will lift the hair away from the skin and soften the beard, allowing the razor to shave the hair with very little resistance. Result: a most clean and comfortable shave.

Q15. Will Pre-Shave Oil make my skin oily or clog my pores?
A15. No, it won’t. The Art of Shaving Pre-Shave Oil is formulated with botanicals and essential oils, carefully selected because they are made of thick molecules, too large to enter and clog the pores of the skin. The purpose of Pre-Shave Oil is to protect the skin. If it penetrated the skin, it would make it oily and would not protect. Oils that clog pores are usually synthetic, such as mineral oil, a common ingredient in cosmetics. The oils in our Pre-Shave Oil are natural and will not clog pores.
Q16. What is the difference between an Alum Block and a Styptic Pen?
A16. They are both in the same family. The alum is more versatile but the styptic is practical for traveling.
Q17. Why do I get irritations when I shave against the grain?
A17. If you shave directly against the grain, the hair is long and facing downward. This creates a lot of resistance on the razor, which results in irritations.
Also, if you use foams, gels and mentholated shaving products, they will not soften and protect the beard sufficiently. Therefore, razor burns will occur.
Always shave with the direction of the hair first, than re-lather and shave gently against the grain. Never shave against the grain first.
Q18. The Art of Shaving razors fit the same blades as razors I get at the drugstore. Why should I spend $200 for this fancy handle?
A18. The Art of Shaving designs handles that are balanced and weighted for better handling. Drugstore-bought handles are feather-light and poorly balanced. A well-balanced razor made of a nice material will enhance the quality of your shave.
Q19. Why do I need a stand for my razor?
A19. The Art of Shaving prides itself on the quality of its razors. Using only the finest materials, these razors are made to last a very long time. A razor stand will allow the razor to dry properly without coming into contact with water. It can also help the blade stay cleaner and last longer.
Q20. Why do we use Algae instead of alcohol in our After-Shaves?
A20. We use Red Algae seaweed because it regulates sebum levels, hydrates parched skin, regenerates the production of skin cells, and acts as an anti-oxidant and anti-inflammatory. Alcohol is only a strong antiseptic, which can be very drying and irritating to the skin.
